Arriving in Texas from South Carolina in 1979, Gary Leland had less than $10 in his pocket. He found a job as a door-to-door salesman, selling storm windows and doors. In 1981, he and his wife Kathy opened their first retail store that sold decorating products. By 1991, the store was included in the Dallas 100 Awards as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in Dallas. Today that store, Leland’s Wallpaper, is the lagest wallpaper store in Texas. Gary and Kathy have been featured in several decorating magazines, focusing on their internet marketing efforts, and in-home sales.
When Gary decided to start his first e-commerce website, people told him he was crazy and stupid, one going so far as to tell him “No one will buy wallpaper on the internet.” He did it anyway, and the site was a roaring success.
In 2000, Gary created Softballjunk.com, the first website for women’s fastpitch softball equipment. He had difficulty finding equipment when he was coaching his daughters’ softball team, so decided to start his own store. That venture changed his life forever. His softball videos produced for Fastpitch TV have now been viewed millions of times. Gary became the Director of Social Media for the United States Sports Specialty Association, with 3.5 million members.
When he learned about podcasting in 2004, Gary became one of the first 100 podcasters on the internet, producing his first sports podcast. By 2006, he was featured in Time Magazine, as his podcasting website was in their list of 50 Coolest Websites on the Planet. In 2007, Podcast Pickle won the Podcast Peer Award in the Best Podcast Directory Category. He is also co-founder of Podcast Movement, the largest podcasting conference in the world.
Gary is publisher of Podertainment Magazine, a magazine for podcasters, and Fastpitch Magazine for softball players. He has also published over 15 e-books and was featured on Fox News Channel.
By 2016 Gary was inducted into The Academy Of Podcasters Hall Of Fame. Gary still produces several podcasts for himself, as well as running the Podcast Repairman Website to help others produce podcasts.
